The Magician Starts 2021 on an Energized Note with ‘One Vibration’

The Magician Starts 2021 on an Energized Note with ‘One Vibration’

Belgian modern house selector The Magician returns today with his latest single ‘One Vibration ft CLYPSO,’ released as part of the producer’s decennial ‘Magic Tape celebration. For the past decade, The Magician has regularly stunned fans with ninety-nine collaborative mixtape projects, a series that blends a variety of the moment’s best house and indie-dance heaters into an hour long mix. ‘One Vibration ft. CLYPSO’ offers a first taste of the much anticipated ‘Magic Tape 100’ multi-artist album, out January 27 on POTION Records.

Sydney-based producer, vocalist, and instrumentalist CLYPSO adds her own personalized ‘tropo chili flakes’ flare to the record as she bounds into 2021. The feature follows lauded 2020 single releases such as ‘Storm’ and ‘Sidestep,’ as well as notable collaborations with Jamie xx,The Avalanches, and Neneh Cherry. As the first single of The Magician’s ‘Magic Tape 100’ project, ‘One Vibration’ will be released alongside an exclusive music video featuring Silvia Saint Martin, the principal dancer at the Paris Ballet Opera, the most reputable dance company in the world alongside Bolchoi in Moscow.

2020 saw The Magician release his two track “Renaissance” EP in May on POTION Records, and while covid-19 kept him grounded the rest of the year, The Magician’s career has previously taken him to all corners of the earth, gracing dance floors and festival stages with a touch of magic – from Coachella to Primavera Sound Festival, Hideout Croatia, EDC Las Vegas, Warung in Brazil, Printworks London, Trouw in Amsterdam, Zouk in Singapore and many more. His early work included a 2011 multi-platinum remix of Lykke Li’s “I Follow Rivers,” which led to further massive pop collaborations with the likes of Chromeo and Clean Bandit and record deals with Parlophone/Warner Records.

The release of ‘One Vibration’ further cements The Magician’s position as an esteemed producer with deep ties to the electronic music community and beyond, and is a welcomed gem for listeners, appropriately previewed ahead of his highly anticipated ‘Magic Tape 100’.

The Magic Tape 100 will be available on all platforms on January 27

Steve Darko Announces Debut LP on DIRTYBIRD with a Double-Sided ‘Descending’

Steve Darko Announces Debut LP on DIRTYBIRD with a Double-Sided ‘Descending’

Today, Steve Darko has announced his debut artist album,‘Midnight Swim’ with the double-sided ‘Descending’ single—out now on DIRTYBIRD. The full length effort features fourteen tracks, each building upon the ingenuity and cutting edge sound design that attracted the label to the budding talent just a few years ago.

Darko’s journey to defy expectation begins immediately in both singles out today, “Descending” and “Red.” The former stirs tension with its high reaching pitch before “Descending” into a menacing hook marked with heavy percussion. It fits easily into the darkest depths of the producer’s catalog, a welcomed departure from the producer to watch. Meanwhile, “Red” pays homage to the halcyon days of acid house while maintaining a modernized arrangement. Rising Floridian star and fellow DIRTYBIRD mentee Nala added a futuristic touch to the finished product with her vocal talents. These sonics stand in direct contrast to “Descending,” pointing to just how dynamic and multifaceted a record ‘Midnight Swim’ will be.

The album is not just a platform for sonic exploration to Steve Darko—it’s ultimately a tale of balance in life, of dark and light. Even its title captures those moments of levity amid a pitch black backdrop. Written largely during a time of global uncertainty and forced lockdowns, ‘Midnight Swim’ in itself was a way for Darko to find his own freedom and catharsis despite grim surrounding circumstances. The project is a manifestation of balance in his personal life; though his work as a full time developer with music production software leader iZotope brings him fulfillment, he holds an equal passion in creating and playing out his art to the world. ‘Midnight Swim’ was thus an exercise in perseverance, and of reconciling these two driving forces.

The album also speaks to the power of collaboration, an art Darko has always embraced as an artist. He employs a multitude of guest artists for the affair, including Claude VonStroke, VNSSA, Rachel Alix, and of course, Nala, to name a few. Nearly half of the LP contains guest writers, which work to push Darko further outside his comfort zone. Each collaborator played a unique role in bringing his vision to fruition, helping to shape the eclectic and wide reaching nature of the record.

DIRTYBIRD’s core ethos has always been about pushing innovative music from the brightest stars of tomorrow—an ethos the brand has reinvigorated heavily in recent years. In providing Steve Darko full support to create the album he envisioned for himself, the resulting patchwork of genres, styles, and instrumentation drives in their staunch commitment to this philosophy. In return, ‘Midnight Swim’ is Darko’s way of pushing both himself and his label family into the next chapter.

Black V Neck’s ‘Bounce Music’ is a Brilliant follow-up to DIRTYBIRD Debut

Black V Neck’s ‘Bounce Music’ is a Brilliant follow-up to DIRTYBIRD Debut

In 2019, Black V Neck made their grand entrance on DIRTYBIRD with the lauded ‘Mouth Music.’ They make their return to the label today with a fresh and funky new two-tracker, this time dubbed ‘Bounce Music.’

One might expect the EP to incite bouncing per the title Black V Neck have bestowed upon it, and indeed it delivers. A springy bassline on its title track paired with a distorted “bounce” vocal mimics the feeling implied, and fits in well with DIRTYBIRD’s quirkier side. “What She Wants” is equally buoyant, and like its predecessor, uses vocals as a main pillar of its construction. This time, however, the duo lean deeper into their eccentricity with various bites of synth and other sound effects.

Having cut their teeth on the local circuit for quite a few years now, Black V Neck are ready to make their entrance into the global sphere. With an expressive ethos that battles the monotony and elitism in today’s underground sphere, the Miami-bred duo are here to provide a refreshing breath of air into house music. They’ve already received major support from Shiba San through signings on the French DJ’s imprint, and are quickly becoming favorites among the DIRTYBIRD ranks. Prior to ‘Mouth Music,’ the pair made their Defected debut with a remix of John Summit’s “Deep End.”

French Canadian Producer, CRi Releases New Single and Video, “Never Really Get There”

French Canadian Producer, CRi Releases New Single and Video, “Never Really Get There”

French Canadian producer showcased his abilities in the dance music world with his new single, “Never Really Get There” featuring Jesse Mac Cormack. The track proves to have potential to be a prominent dance track of the summer.

“Never Really Get There” draws on the alternative electronic dance sounds of CRi and the catchy melodic vocals of Jesse to create a hypnotic track that is impossible to not have on repeat. The melodic lyrics capture the idea of how sometimes expectations you set will never be met, providing an almost familiar yet nostalgic feeling throughout the song.

Speaking of familiar, the song is accompanied with a music video that is quite relatable to all of us. The “Never Really Get There” music video produced by CRi’s sister, Alexa-Jeanne Dubé, portrays a series of people spending time inside their homes. The video was inspired by the lockdown we have all been subject to this past summer and how people are getting through it. CRi explained how the song related to the video, “It’s symbolic for the song, because “Never Really Get There” is about being stuck outside yourself and not being able to get back in.”

CRi has been working extremely hard on his music and it shows to be paying off. His early singles “Rush” and “Don’t” have proven him to be a notable artist in the dance music world along with his nomination for Electronic Release of The Year at the 2018 Juno Awards.

Desire’s “Don’t Call” Gets A New Sound From Israeli DJ, Guy Gerber

Desire’s “Don’t Call” Gets A New Sound From Israeli DJ, Guy Gerber

The 2009 heartbreak tune, “Don’t Call” by Canadian trio Desire has been turned into one of the summers hottest dance tracks by electronic producer Guy Gerber. The reimagined single provides an exciting new beat by Guy with the same catchy lyrics we know and love from Desire. The single does a full 360, giving us an uplifting dance-worthy tune for fans to enjoy all summer long. This might not be the first time you have heard this track as it received an incredible reaction when he dropped it in his only live-stream from his home in Rio last month and has also been a popular hit in many of Guy Gerber’s live performances.

Guy Gerber has been working from his home in Rio on a lot of new material for his fans and if it is anything like this rework we can’t wait.

Paul Kalkbrenner Goes Deep on ‘Speak Up’ EP

Paul Kalkbrenner Goes Deep on ‘Speak Up’ EP

Hailing from East Berlin, Paul Kalkbrenner has long championed the music from his home and from Detroit as being integral to his success as one of techno’s most prominent global players.

In 2016, he released his 3-part ‘Back to the Future’ mixtape series, which saw Paul revisiting the songs of his youth, and compiling them in a mixtape series that’s been listened to millions of times to date. Now, he revisits the sounds of old once more in his ‘Speak Up’ EP.

The EP is classic Kalkbrenner in many ways, sticking to the grand techno sound that rose him to fame. But the EP is also a diversion, with a focus on deep club sounds and vocals like he rarely does.

‘Speak Up’ stands out as one of the deeper tracks that Paul has produced. ‘Eyes Open’ shows clear influence from the Detroit sound of old that lit up dance floors for decades. ‘Laser In’ goes a little darker, with really buzzy synths atop a distorted bass and drum groove. ‘Check Yourself’ exudes similar energy, but with a more refined synth lead and more delicate percussion.
